Principal’s Message

Dear SPC Families,

Thank you for your continued support of Catholic education at St. Paul of the Cross School. As we enter September, our community is settling into daily routines, preparing for Back-to-School Night, and getting ready for i-Ready standardized testing. We are also reviewing our support and enrichment programs so that every student is both challenged and nurtured.

At SPC, our mission is not only to teach, but to form students in faith, knowledge, and service. Together, we are preparing graduates who will go forth as faith-filled leaders, committed Christians, and loyal citizens ready to serve in a global society.

Out of Uniform Passes and Teacher Appreciation Lunches
Home and School Association programs or co-sponsored activities are already underway, and we need your partnership to keep the positive momentum. Out of Uniform Passes fund the majority of Home and School activities. We are asking each family to complete this formOne form per student enrolled at SPC needs to be completed. This form will allow you to purchase Out of Uniform Passes and also provide you with the opportunity to donate towards our monthly teacher/faculty luncheon and birthday celebrations.

This year, the Home and School Out of Uniform Passes are $40 and valid for the following dates (also indicated on the SPC School Calendar): 9/19, 10/17, 11/21, 12/12, 1/16, 2/13, 3/12, 4/16, 5/15

Preschool students will be able to purchase “themed day” passes for $20 on the same days (for example, PJ Day, Superhero Day, etc.). The list of themes will be sent in August. 

On the form, you will also have an opportunity to donate towards Teacher Appreciation Lunches. Each month, Home and School provides a faculty and staff lunch. The requested contribution per student is $20.00.

Principal’s Message

Dear SPC Families,

The first days of school are officially here, and our campus is alive with the wonderful buzz of students settling into their new routines. As a principal, I often wish I could capture and save the joy, energy, and excitement that fill these early days—so we can revisit it during those times later in the year when challenges arise. For now, the enthusiasm is contagious, and we are all riding the wave together as the year begins to take shape.

I am also delighted to share some exciting news. Many of you may have already heard that Sr. Pia Shelton, CSFN, has joined SPC as our new Campus Chaplain. Her role will include planning Masses, supporting sacramental preparation, visiting classrooms, and meeting with students both individually and in small groups. Sr. Pia’s presence will be a wonderful gift to our Catholic identity and to the spiritual growth of our students. When you see her around campus, please join me in extending a warm SPC welcome!

Sr. Pia is a Sister of the Holy Family of Nazareth and has been a part of her religious community for five years. The sisters are dedicated to living out the humble, joy-filled spirit of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph in Nazareth—finding the love of God in the ordinary moments of daily life. Their ministries extend across the world, serving families in many ways.

A little more about Sr. Pia: she was born in Tennessee, raised in Texas, and has lived in the Chicago area (Des Plaines) for the past three years. She enjoys creative projects such as watercolor painting, graphic design, and finding engaging ways to help young people grow closer to God. We are truly blessed to have her at St. Paul of the Cross, and she is eager to get to know our students and families.

SPC Tiger Fun Run 2025

Welcome back to school! We are excited for our SPC Tiger Fun Run this year; mark your calendars for Friday, September 26th!

The SPC Tiger Fun Run is a ten-day, all-school program that kicks off on Wednesday, September 17th. All students will participate and gather pledges through their own personalized pledge pages for running in the Tiger Fun Run on Friday, September 26th.

We will continue with our 2nd year of implementing Wayfinder, SEL curriculum PK-8. Once the Advisory and Morning Meeting begin, we will be sending home links with more information.

Dear SPC Families,

Welcome to a brand-new school year! With great joy and anticipation, we open our doors for our 101st year of Catholic school education here at SPC. This remarkable milestone is a testament to the dedication and love of our parish, parents, students, faculty, alumni—and, of course, the power of prayer.

Through the years, our school has thrived because of the faith-filled commitment of our community, and I am confident that the 2025–2026 school year will be no exception. We have so much to be grateful for, and even more to look forward to.

I wish each of you an inspiring and joy-filled start to the school year. Let’s make this a year of faith, learning, friendship, and growth for every child in our care!

Welcome Parents! 
We hope everyone has had a safe, relaxing and joyful summer as we all eagerly anticipate the start of the 2025-2026 Saint Paul Tigers school year! A warm welcome to all the new families entering their first year with SPC and a hearty welcome back to all our returning Tigers!

On Sunday, August 17th, please join us for our Back to School Mass at 4 p.m. in the Upper Church.  Immediately following Mass we will have an Ice Cream Social in the Safe Zone and Teacher meet-and-greet/supply drop-off in your respective classrooms. Teacher Meet and Greet/Supply Drop-off will be after Mass until 6:30. 

If you ordered your school supplies through Home and School, they will be delivered to your child’s classroom.  

Friendly reminders:

  • For K-8 Families: Last call for the used uniform sale from 2:30-3:30 in the UGC. Cash only!
  • For Preschool Families: Uniforms and school supplies are not required for PK3 or PK4 and if you are unfamiliar, here is a map to find the Safe Zone (Zones 3 and 4.)
  • Don’t forget to check out the freshly painted four square, hop scotch and other painted stencils in the safe zone!
  • A ticket system is being implemented for ice cream this year. Please make sure you grab an ice cream ticket from the ticket table before enjoying an ice cream.

Playground Stencils Project Complete!
A huge thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers who came together last weekend to refresh our Preschool – 4th Grade recess playlot, the Safe Zone. They spent the day painting bright, colorful designs on the newly repaved area! There are so many people to thank for this beautiful playlot refresh! Dear SPC Families,

Words cannot begin to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation for all your kind well wishes and notes. I will forever remember my surprise send-off yesterday and the beautiful notes shared with me by the children. Leaving SPC is truly one of the most difficult choices I have made in my career; it has been my second home for the past 7 years and a place my children also call home. It has been the greatest honor to watch your children grow, and I am grateful for the trust you placed in me to lead the school.  I have been honored to work alongside the amazing and talented teachers who I am now proud to call friends. I pray that you will strongly consider Saint Viator High School when it comes to choosing a high school–we are only a few steps away on the Metra line (I know, shameless plug). And now for a few final notes:

  • For those of you who got the whistle in the drop-off line, I hope you have learned from your mistakes and know you will not make that mistake again. I have warned Mr. White of the SPC expectations in the kiss-and-go line, so be warned! 
  • To the many, many parent volunteers who coach, supervise recess, help with security, chaperone field trips, volunteer at HSA events, and serve on advisory boards, thank you!  Your energy and passion for SPC truly make this community one of the best! 
  • Please be nice to Mr. White for his first Fun Run Incentive (don’t put him on the roof)
  • To the faculty, staff and students–you are the greatest gift and true heart of the school!  SPC is a beautiful place to learn and grow because of your energy, hard work, and dedication. 
  • Remember, no u-turn on Summit during drop off and pick up
  • To Father James and Father Britto, with whom I have been honored to work, I am eternally grateful for the trust you placed in me to lead this incredible school. 

Lastly, to our amazing students, I have been honored to be your principal, and it truly has been a joy watching you all grow!  I look forward to hearing about all you accomplish and will forever keep you in my prayers!

Dear SPC Families,

Last night, we graduated our 100th graduating class!  Congratulations to the Class of 2025! We are excited to see what they will accomplish in the future! This past week, after we “clapped out” our graduates, we welcomed back the SPC Class of 2021 for a reunion before they leave for college this fall. SPC Tigers truly are the bright light for our future; they leave SPC with a solid foundation that allows them to thrive in high school, opening many doors to outstanding colleges and universities! 

OLYMPICS ARE TOMORROW!  BEST DAY EVER! (please read carefully for all details) 
SPC Olympics is tomorrow!  It’s hard to believe such an exciting tradition is upon us again.  A big thank you in advance to over 80 parents who will be volunteering during the day tomorrow to make this a special day for our students. Even our preschoolers will enjoy a special Tiny Tiger Olympics in the safe zone! The weather looks like it will cooperate! 

STUDENT ATTIRE:
As a reminder, all students (in grades K-7) will be given their Olympics t-shirts when they report to their homeroom in the morning. Students will change into their shirts in the bathrooms. The weather report says that the temps will be in the high 70s and that rain isn’t on the radar until after dismissal, so we encourage students to dress appropriately in SPC gym short bottoms. Athletic shoes are required to participate in the day as well. Home and School and their generous sponsors purchased the SPC Olympics shirts for each student this year, and each Olympic Team has a unique colored t-shirt. This will help keep teams together and help students easily identify their teams. STUDENTS MUST WEAR THEIR ASSIGNED TEAM SHIRTS TO PARTICIPATE IN THE OLYMPICS. Volunteers will also be given shirts. 

WHAT SHOULD MY CHILD BRING TOMORROW?
Students must come to school with a labeled water bottle to carry with them throughout the games. Home and School Association will provide snacks (Skinny Pop and Popsicles) and Hot Lunch (Home Run Inn) for those who ordered it. Students will be outside for the majority of the day, so applying sunscreen before school is a good idea. 

PARKING AND DROP OFF:
Please DO NOT park in the FM Global parking lot or the Ryan Parke Funeral Home Lot. 

The main parking lot will be closed at 7:00 am. Please use Washington for drop-off. DO NOT DROP YOUR CHILD OFF NORTHBOUND ON WASHINGTON; WE DO NOT WANT KIDS CROSSING THE STREET IN BETWEEN TRAFFIC. You may also use Summit and Ridge Terrace for Kiss and Go.  

DISMISSAL:  
Hopefully, the well-planned schedule will go smoothly, but we ask for some patience if dismissal is a little after 3:00. We aim to open the parking lot by 2:50. 

SPECTATORS:
Tomorrow is a very busy day with multiple logistics; if you are not signed up as a registered volunteer, you cannot come to campus to spectate. We have volunteer t-shirts for those adults who are assisting so that we can easily identify approved adults on campus. Non-volunteers will be asked to leave campus. We appreciate your cooperation.

Congratulations to our amazing Cast and Crew of Alice in Wonderland! Please consider coming tonight to see the show; it will not disappoint! The show starts at 6:30 pm.

Next, please keep the Class of 2025 in your prayers as they celebrate their last days at SPC with their 8th-grade Memory Day, Dinner Dance, and Graduation on Wednesday! We are so proud of all the Class of 2025 has accomplished and are excited for the next chapter in their education.

Dear SPC Families,

This week we celebrated May Crowning! It was a beautiful day honoring Mary and celebrating our First Communicants and 8th graders! Thank you to Mrs. Donahue and the 2nd-grade teachers for making Mass so special! As we look towards the end of  May, please keep our 8th graders in your prayers as they enjoy the final celebrations and prepare to graduate! 

Thank you to Mrs. Dohr and her army of parent volunteers for their work on the book fair! Many happy kids returned to their classroom with their new books.

Please join us for the Art Fair this Sunday from 11:00-2:00 in the Gym. Congratulations to Ms. Lefler and Mrs. McGovern for making the Art Fair possible!

“Habemus Papem!” Today, our students and faculty were joyfully watching the white smoke and the announcement of Pope Leo the XIV!  We were able to go outside and listen to the church bells toll in the excitement of the election of the 1st American Pope! May is always a very busy month, and this year is no exception. I want to give a shout-out and sincere thanks to all of our parents who volunteered for Career Day last week. Our 4th-8th graders loved learning about a variety of careers. 

Thank you to Home and School for planning a delightful Teacher Appreciation Week. We are so blessed to have supportive parents who shower the teachers with gratitude.

Next Tuesday, we will be inducting the new class of National Junior Honor Society Members!

2024-2025 Family Masses: Save The Dates
This year, we have been hosting Family Masses at 10:30 AM in the Holy Family Chapel. These Family Masses are an excellent opportunity for our school community to pray together! Our students do the readings, serve as ushers, and our alumni return to be Eucharistic Ministers.

While the school hosts the above Family Masses, Religious Education hosts Family Masses on the following Sundays at 10:30 AM, and school families are always invited!

Attention All 8th Grade Male Parishioners – SPC Men’s Club Rising Star Scholarship Application

In an effort to promote and encourage Catholic Education, the SPMC will award a $5,000 scholarship to be utilized at any approved Catholic High School Institution in the Chicagoland area. This scholarship opportunity is open to any 8th Grade male parishioner of St. Paul of the Cross. The Rising Star Scholarship will be awarded to the deserving individual who demonstrates these key requirements. 

  • Demonstrates aptitude for extracurricular activities and has contributed to his community through philanthropic opportunities.
  • Completes an essay of 500 words or less titled, “What I will gain from a Catholic Education.” 
  • Provides a letter or recommendation from a current 8th grade SPC teacher
  • All applicants will interview with SPC Men’s Club Board Members (evening of May 13,14th and/or 15th)  at SPC.

All entries are due no later than Saturday, May 10th and must be submitted to [email protected]

Penny War Success! 
During Week of the Young Child, our school community came together in a big way for our Penny War collection—and we’re thrilled to share that we raised a total of $1,944 to support an organization in need of financial assistance!

A huge thank-you to everyone who participated and donated—every penny truly made a difference.

  • Special shoutout to Kindergarten, who led the way with an impressive 23,748 points! (Remember: pennies and dollar bills add to your score, while silver coins take points away!) Their generosity and competitive spirit helped drive this effort to success.
  • Congratulations to Ms. Kasprzyk’s third grade class, the winning third grade class in the UGC, with 13,271 points! There was a lot of silver coin sabotage happening throughout the week, which made the competition even more exciting and fun to watch unfold!

💛 We’re proud to share that the funds raised will be donated to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, to support the incredible work they do for children in their care. 

Thank you all for your kindness, teamwork, and enthusiasm! What a wonderful way to celebrate Week of the Young Child!

Attention All 8th Grade Male Parishioners – SPC Men’s Club Rising Star Scholarship Application

In an effort to promote and encourage Catholic Education, the SPMC will award a $5,000 scholarship to be utilized at any approved Catholic High School Institution in the Chicagoland area. This scholarship opportunity is open to any 8th Grade male parishioner of St. Paul of the Cross. The Rising Star Scholarship will be awarded to the deserving individual who demonstrates these key requirements. 

  • Demonstrates aptitude for extracurricular activities and has contributed to his community through philanthropic opportunities.
  • Completes an essay of 500 words or less titled, “What I will gain from a Catholic Education.” 
  • Provides a letter or recommendation from a current 8th grade SPC teacher
  • All applicants will interview with SPC Men’s Club Board Members (evening of May 13,14th and/or 15th)  at SPC.

All entries are due no later than Saturday, May 10th and must be submitted to [email protected]

Dear SPC Families,

We have had quite a busy week at SPC! Thank you to all the families who participated in our Day of Service in honor of our 100th anniversary. We certainly surpassed our goal of 100 hours of service for the day! Thank you to Mrs Donahue, who organized all the service options. 

On Monday, the choir led by Ms Verdun led a beautiful Divine Mercy Chaplet in the church! It was a prayerful Lenten evening. Thank you to all who attended to support the choir and Ms Verdun. 

Next week, a long-anticipated Spring break starts at 3:00 pm on Wednesday, April 16th. We will return from break on April 28th. There will be no Thursday mailing next week. 

VIP DAY TOMORROW!
We are excited to welcome our VIPs (Very Important People) for a special morning at school! Each student (Preschool – 3rd Grade) may bring ONE (1) VIP to join them for this event.

Endowment Scholarships for the 2025-2026 School Year
I am excited to announce a new merit-based scholarship for current 5th and 6th grade students for the 2025-2026 school year. After 22 years of attending St. Paul of the Cross school, the O’Regan family created this scholarship in gratitude for the formation and education their six children received at St. Paul of the Cross while also honoring Mother Cabrini’s connection to the St. Paul of the Cross faith community.

The Mother Cabrini Legacy Scholarship
Mother Cabrini never took no for an answer; she trusted in God and was resourceful in her pursuit of equality in her community, establishing hospitals, orphanages, etc…in essence, she was a trailblazer. Mother Cabrini was a member of the St. Paul of the Cross faith community–this scholarship is to be a memorial to her legacy and relentless faith in Jesus.

THE RETURN OF SHORTS?
Just because you can wear them after April 15th might not always be a good idea given that it snowed yesterday! But the dress code states that shorts can be worn after April 15th!


DISSECTION CLUB–CALLING ALL 7th and 8th graders!
Dissection club by Mr. Galuska. The 7th and 8th graders will have the opportunity to dissect a mink, iguana, and quail. The students will be able to see, touch, and hold the organs of an animal.

Dear Family Members, Classmates, and SPC Community: We know you are just as excited as our young thespians about the upcoming Alice in Wonderland Jr production! You have the perfect opportunity to shout out your favorite actors in the playbill. You may buy multiple shout-outs; cheer on your family and friends.

There are three shout-out options available: by the line ($5), a half-page ($20/30), or a full-page ($40/50). Attached are examples of each type of shout-out for your reference. Lenten Almsgiving Envelopes Due 15th!
We are partnering with Catholic Extension again this year to provide resources to a mission parish that is in need of support. We are excited to support Mother of Mercy Parish in Mobile, Alabama!  CLICK HERE TO LEARN MORE about the project. Your student brought home an envelope so that they may collect their donations. Parents, it is important that you do not give the money to the kids!  They can make donations and earn money by helping around the house or giving up a treat in exchange for a donation. Teachers will discuss almsgiving during classes.

Our SPC Fish Fry events are a highlight of the Lenten season—a time to come together as a parish community, enjoy delicious food, and strengthen our bonds of fellowship. Mark your calendars for Friday, April 11.

These events are only possible with the help of volunteers like you! The SPC Women’s Group partners with the Knights of Columbus for these events. We have many opportunities for you to help make these welcoming and successful events for our parish.
