Principal’s Message

Dear SPC Families,

As we enter the second week of Lent, I am grateful for the many ways our community continues to gather, grow, and support one another in faith and fellowship.

Celebrating the Spirit 2026 – It’s a Wrap!
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who made Celebrating the Spirit 2026 such a tremendous success! As your principal, I am truly inspired by the dedication and generosity of our community. A special thank you to committee chairs Caitlin Brown, Kelly Bontempo, and Megan Weber, along with the entire CTS committee. It was a fantastic evening for our entire community! You can see some of the highlights in the video link here.

From our event sponsors and well-wishers, to ad sponsors, party board hosts, auction donors, paddle raise donors, and all who placed bids on auction packages or signed up for party boards or teacher parties—your involvement made all the difference.

Thanks to your collective support, we raised more than $140,000 in net proceeds! This achievement is a testament to the strong partnership between our parents, teachers, staff, and community members. Thank you for coming together to create a lasting impact for our students and school community.

We are especially grateful that 100% of the funds raised directly benefit every member of our dedicated faculty and staff, whose tireless efforts and countless hours are devoted to educating and nurturing your children.

Thank you to all of the students and parents who joined us for our first Young Men’s Club meeting on Friday, February 20. With more than 50 students and parents in attendance, our inaugural gathering at Notre Dame High School was truly a tremendous success. This meaningful evening would not have been possible without Sr. Pia, our parent guests, the student speakers, the campus ministry team at Notre Dame, and every member of our Young Men’s Club planning committee. Your time, insight, and commitment made this launch so special.

A very special thank you as well to Mrs. Molly Moran for leading this year’s Father/Daughter Dance on February 21. Mrs. Moran and the entire Home & School Committee poured countless hours into thoughtful planning and coordination, resulting in a joyful and memorable day for our families. We are so appreciative of their time, talents, and dedication to our community.

As we head into a fun and exciting roundball week, I wish all of our students and families a spirit-filled experience. It is my hope that our school spirit, sportsmanship, and celebration of one another serve as a light for others to follow.

Wishing you a wonderful remainder of the week.

Help us be the best we can be…5Essentials Survey
At Saint Paul of the Cross, we value our strong partnership with families and deeply appreciate the role you play in our school community. One important way you can share your voice is by participating in the 2026 5Essentials® Parent Survey, sponsored by the Archdiocese of Chicago.

The 5Essentials® is a research-based school improvement survey that gathers feedback on key aspects of a school’s culture and climate. Parent input helps schools better understand their strengths and identify areas for growth in five essential areas:

  • Effective Leaders
  • Collaborative Teachers
  • Involved Families
  • Supportive Environment
  • Ambitious Instruction

Survey results provide valuable insights that guide improvement planning and professional learning, ultimately supporting positive outcomes for our students.

We encourage all SPC parents to take a few moments to complete the survey before it closes on March 20, 2026. Your responses are confidential and truly make a difference.

Thank you for your continued support of Saint Paul of the Cross and for partnering with us in this important work. We are grateful for your time, your trust, and your voice.

Principal’s Message

Dear SPC Families,

As we enter the second week of Lent, we are reminded that this sacred season calls us to prayer, sacrifice, and gratitude. Lent invites us to slow down, reflect, and draw closer to Christ through simple acts of love and service. I am continually inspired by the way our SPC community embraces this journey with such faithfulness and generosity. Your partnership in nurturing both the spiritual and academic growth of our students is a true blessing.

I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to our incredible Home & School Association for their tireless fundraising efforts and thoughtful event planning. Their dedication behind the scenes is a tremendous gift to our school. So much of SPC’s success is made possible through their commitment, creativity, and countless volunteer hours. We are deeply grateful for the energy and care they pour into strengthening our community.

To all of our parents, thank you for the many ways you so selflessly share your time, talents, and treasures. Whether volunteering in classrooms, supporting school initiatives, cheering from the sidelines, or lifting our community up in prayer, your partnership makes SPC the special place it is. We are truly blessed by your generosity and unwavering support.

This Sunday, our Winter Athletics teams will host the 10:30 a.m. Family Mass in the Holy Family Chapel. All are warmly invited to join us as we gather in faith and fellowship. It is always a joy to see our students take active roles in celebrating the Eucharist, and we look forward to worshiping together as one SPC family.

Finally, Nurse Kari will be joining me next Wednesday, February 25, for Coffee with the Principal. We will be discussing lice and other communicable illnesses that can occasionally circulate among our students, and we hope this conversation will provide helpful information and reassurance. We look forward to gathering together for this informative and supportive discussion.

May your Lenten journey continue to be filled with grace and peace. Thank you for being such an essential part of our SPC family.

Principal’s Message

Dear SPC Families,

As we enter the holy season of Lent, we invite our school community to begin these 40 days with prayer, reflection, and a renewed focus on growing closer to Christ. On Tuesday, Fr. James will burn the palms with all students in the Safe Zone to help prepare our hearts and mark the beginning of this sacred time. On Ash Wednesday, we will come together as a school community to celebrate Mass, reminding our students of the call to prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.

Below is a complete list of our Lenten activities planned for students and families. We hope these opportunities encourage meaningful conversations, intentional acts of kindness, and moments of quiet reflection throughout the season.
SPC Lent 2026

As we look ahead, we also wish our families a happy Valentine’s Day this Saturday, February 14. Please note that there will be no school on Monday, February 16, in recognition of Presidents’ Day. We pray that this long weekend offers you time for rest, family, and faith as we begin our Lenten journey together.

Congratulations to Dr. Ochsner and the “St. Paul of the Crops” Future City Team for their impressive achievements at the Illinois Future City Competition in January! Earning 3rd Place Overall, Outstanding Project Management, and Best Team Name is a tremendous accomplishment. Their creativity and thoughtful design even earned them recognition from NPR, which interviewed the team during the event, and their segment aired this afternoon. Be sure to check out NPR’s All Things Considered segment to hear more. Well done, “St. Paul of the Crops!”

Please read through the entire Thursday Mailing for news and important updates. A final reminder: our Celebrating the Spirit Teacher Parties and the remaining Party Boards will close tomorrow. If you haven’t signed up yet, now is your last chance! Don’t miss out on these amazing events designed to create lasting memories for our students and families while supporting our Teacher Bonus Fund.

Tuition Rates 2026/2027: 5% Increase
As part of our planning for the 2026–2027 school year, we want to share an overview of the 5% tuition increase that will be reflected in next year’s rates. This adjustment allows Saint Paul of the Cross School to continue providing a high-quality Catholic education while responsibly addressing rising operational costs.

The increase is primarily driven by projected expenses, including a 3.5–4% salary increase to remain competitive and retain excellent faculty and staff, a 6–12% rise in employee benefits, and a minimum 6% increase in utility costs. In addition, we anticipate approximately a 10% increase in instructional materials and supplies, along with higher costs associated with campus maintenance, capital improvements, and ongoing investments in school safety and security.

Our budget is built on a projected enrollment of 730 students in grades Preschool through 8 and reflects our commitment to careful financial stewardship while prioritizing student learning, faculty support, and a safe, well-maintained campus. We are grateful for your continued partnership and trust as we work together to sustain and strengthen the mission of SPC.

2 Children $14,220
3 Children $18,950

Calendar 2026/2027:
We are happy to share a draft of the 2026–2027 school calendar to help families begin planning for the upcoming school year. This calendar has been submitted to the Archdiocese of Chicago and is awaiting final approval, but we wanted to provide an early look at the general structure of the year.

Please keep in mind that this draft highlights major dates and does not include all weekly activities or events. Once we receive final approval, a complete and finalized calendar will be shared with our school community.

Gospel Reflection:

For the First Sunday of Lent on February 22, 2026, the Gospel (Matthew 4:1-11) Recounts Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness, emphasizing his victory over Satan through Scripture, fasting, and obedience. This passage calls believers to examine their own temptations, resist worldly treasures, and rely on God’s grace during the Lenten journey.
Mt 4:1-11

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And he fasted forty days and forty nights, and afterward he was hungry. And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” But he answered, “It is written,

‘Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’”

Then the devil took him to the holy city, and set him on the pinnacle of the temple, 6 and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down; for it is written,

‘He will give his angels charge of you,’

and

‘On their hands they will bear you up,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.’”

Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’” Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and the glory of them; and he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” Then Jesus said to him, “Begone, Satan! for it is written,

‘You shall worship the Lord your God
and him only shall you serve.’”

Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and ministered to him.

Principal’s Message

Dear Saint Paul of the Cross Families,

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the SPC community for your generous support of our annual Celebrating the Spirit event. Your gifts of time, talent, and treasure are deeply appreciated, and your ongoing commitment to our school strengthens and sustains our mission. Our committee is diligently finalizing the event details, and we look forward to sharing the proceeds with you in the coming days.

Next week, Sr. Pia will share details about our Lenten activities for the school community. These will include Ash Wednesday Mass, a school-wide presentation of the Living Stations of the Cross, and additional opportunities for students and families to reflect and grow together during the Lenten and Easter seasons. I will also post the 2026/2027 tuition rates and school calendar once Arch approval is received.

Please look for a separate email later this week about our newly formed Young Men’s Club for male students in grades 4–8. I will facilitate a lunch meeting next Friday for interested students. The club will support the continued development of young Catholic men through virtue, positive socialization, and faith formation in their daily lives. More details will be shared soon.

As part of our ongoing commitment to prayer and faith leadership, I am asking that all programs, athletic events, and meetings begin with prayer. Sr. Pia is currently drafting a common prayer for all athletic teams and events. In addition, we will introduce a “common” welcome prayer along with the National Anthem at the start of all athletic events.

As we reflect on this week’s Gospel reading, may we be reminded of our call to live as witnesses of Christ’s love:

“You are the salt of the earth… You are the light of the world… Let your light so shine before others, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”

— Matthew 5:13–16

May we continue to let our light shine brightly in all that we do, bringing glory to God through our words and actions.
