Dear SPC Families,

While this week has been a challenge for all of us, I would like to first thank all of our amazing teachers who have been working tirelessly to provide learning, community and connection during these uncertain times. Overnight they were asked to put fear aside and create an online platform so that our kids can continue to learn. They recognized quickly that it was also important for our kids to see one another and started using tools to allow for greater connection.

This was unprecedented and new to us all. We recognize that it was not perfect. On behalf of the entire faculty, thank you for your patience and understanding. We fully recognize that overnight you were thrown into a teacher’s chair all the while trying to manage working from home. I have asked the teachers to remember to practice self-care. If at anytime the e-learning becomes too stressful in your home, please email your teachers. More stress in our lives is not what we need now.

As I wrote this Thursday Mailing, Mayor Lightfoot announced Chicago schools are closed through April 20th. While I am not aware of any announcement regarding the Arch schools outside of Chicago or at the State Level, I would imagine our e-learning will continue past March 31st.

I know you all have questions about ASPIRE testing and Easter Break. As soon as I am made aware of any changes I will let you know. Should this extend past Easter Break, we will suspend e-learning during that time.

This is new for all of us and I appreciate your patience. You are all in my prayers daily. Many of our families are first responders or work in the health profession, please hold them all in your prayers throughout this.

If I have learned anything during this first week, it is the power of community. SPC is a beautiful place where community and faith is the center of who we are. Today, I watched a first grade class pray together on zoom and every time I think about that moment I cry all over again. Despite all the uncertainty, our children know the power of prayer and the power of being with one another!

Here is a great article on helping children during this time. Children sense this and are coping the best they can, but it is also understood they are scared and anxious. Heart of the School Awards Nomination officially launched!

Every year, the Archdiocese of Chicago honors outstanding Catholic school employees with the Heart of the School Awards. Any current full or part-time St. Paul of the Cross School teacher, administrator, or staff member may be nominated here through March 30, 2020. Nominations are accepted across seven categories: Heart of Christ, Heart of the Community, Heart of Excellence, Heart of Enrichment, Heart of the Future, Heart of Inclusion, and Heart of Service. We encourage all school parents and students to consider the many ways your teachers and staff embody the descriptions of these seven categories and take a moment to honor them with your nomination. Parents, students, fellow teachers and staff may submit up to seven separate nominations (one form per category). Winners will be selected by a committee appointed by the Office of Catholic Schools and honored at the Heart of the School luncheon this spring. 


ENDOWMENT SCHOLARSHIPS DEADLINE EXTENDED APRIL 7th - Attention Parents and Students - Five Merit Based Scholarships 

The Endowment Committee is excited to announce the merit-based scholarships available to current SPC students for the 2020-2021 school year. Each year the Endowment administers five merit-based, named scholarships totaling $3,750:

  1. Pastoral Leadership Award- We are pleased to invite current 5th and 6th grade students to Three monetary awards of $750 will be given to students who most demonstrate the qualities of leadership and service to others.
  2. Maureen Kelly McCambridge Scholarship- We are pleased to invite current 7th grade students to apply for this $1000 scholarship established in Maureen’s honor and
  3. Roseann McHugh New Family Welcome Award- This $500 award is available to families who, for the first time during the 2019-2020 school year, have students in K-7th grades and are returning to SPC for a second year. It will be granted to welcome a new family to the SPC community.

Last Year SPC raised over $33,000 to fight childhood cancer. We participated in honor of Dominic Vecchio, who sadly lost his courageous battle this December. This year let us honor the memory and fight of Dominic and so many children who face cancer. Please consider joining the team and raising money. Last year we also had a great time at the event while fighting for a great cause!

Reading Program Parent Letter 2020 Final 1

St. Paul of the Cross will be starting a reading incentive program called Squeeze’s Scholars on Monday, March 16th. The Chicago Dogs professional baseball team in Rosemont is providing us with this wonderful opportunity. As an incentive to participate in this fun program, every student who reads the goal set by their grade level teacher between March 16th and May 8th will receive a free hat and a free ticket to any Chicago Dogs 2020 regular season home game at Impact Field.  When your child has completed their reading goal at home, send the verification form attached to this email on or before Friday, May 8th. The Six Flags® Read to Succeed Six Hour Reading Club

A few weeks ago all kindergarten through sixth grade students received the Six Flags Read to Succeed Six Hour Reading Club information. The Six Flags® Read to Succeed Six Hour Reading Club is due by Wednesday. April 8th.  Teachers will not be accepting reading logs after that date. Every student in kindergarten through sixth grade who completes six hours of recreational reading and enters the information online by Friday, Wednesday, April 8th is eligible for a free admission ticket valid at Six Flags Great America. Tickets will arrive in May, and will be distributed to those students that participated.

Dear Parents,

Thank you for your patience with all these emails. I know these are uncertain times and please understand we are trying our best to provide regular updates. At the moment please note the following:

  • School will resume as scheduled on Monday. However, if local authorities provide different guidance, we will let you know ASAP.
  • Parent Teacher Conferences will take place as planned from 8:00am-10:00am tomorrow.
  • All sports camp tomorrow will proceed as planned.
  • All athletic activities are cancelled through Sunday. The other Principals and I are in constant communication and we will evaluate the rest of the sports season on Sunday.
  • All extra curricular activities scheduled for the weekend are cancelled, this includes play practice.
  • The Mother-Son Dinner has been postponed.
  • All field trips are cancelled for the month of March.
  • I am having teachers prepare possible E-Learning plans, we want to make sure that if there is a possible closing we are prepared to provide academic support to students. In the event of school closing, this would all be communicated through Google Classroom.
  • As I mentioned in my email this morning, we are in consult with the Archdiocese and public health officials. Should any situation change, we will make decisions that are in the best interest of our school community.

7 WAYS TO HELP KIDS COPE WITH CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19) ANXIETY

If the ongoing spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19) is causing anxiety, stress and uncertainty for adults, consider how troubling it may be for children.

Depending on their age and media exposure, children may know more about the virus than grownups think. And even if unaware, children still might sense tension and anxiety from adults around them.

Children’s pediatric psychologist, Dr. Sabrina Stutz, offers seven things parents can do to help reduce their children’s anxiety about COVID-19.

1) Meet children’s concerns with validation, compassion

  • Listen carefully to their concerns and learn where they heard their information. Validate their fears by saying something like, “It can be frightening when a new illness comes around that we don’t know everything about.”
  • Gently correct any misconceptions they may have heard and encourage them to continue to ask questions.
  • Maintaining a routine can provide children a sense of security. Keeping a usual schedule – including school, activities and chores – will protect mental and physical health.

2) Stick to developmentally appropriate facts

  • Avoid having adult-level conversations about COVID-19 around children. Similarly, carefully monitor children’s exposure to media reports about the virus.
  • Answer questions with brief, developmentally appropriate explanations. For example, you might tell a young child, “Coronavirus is a new type of cold/flu, and so it is important for us to wash our hands more and sneeze in our elbows to keep healthy.”
  • Remind children that doctors and other experts around the world are working hard to stop the virus. This can help kids understand that smart, capable people are taking action.

3) Reassure kids by empowering them

  • Telling kids how they can help provides a sense of agency and can turn anxiety into an actionable goal.
  • Reassure children that they can protect themselves and others by practicing proper hand-washing and cough etiquette and taking other healthy steps.
  • Kids can also be included in other family-wide preparations. For example, if you were preparing for the possibility of being home for a while, ask the child what they might want to snack on or what activities they might enjoy during that time.

4) Look for kid-friendly methods

  • Make learning about hand washing and other preventative measures fun. Help kids learn about germs by giving them some lotion and then sprinkling glitter on their hands. Tell them the glitter is like germs, and then ask the child to try to wipe it off with a paper towel or just water. They won’t get far! Then you can explain how soap and warm water removes the glitter – and germs – best.
  • Teach younger children how long to wash hands for by singing a 20- to 30-second song together. “Happy Birthday” or the “ABCs” are classics. You can also be creative and estimate 20-to-30 seconds of any song the child likes.

5) Emphasize kindness

  • As always, it is helpful to teach kids to continue to be kind to all people, regardless of their country of origin or their appearance. Kindness is always possible – even when they feel afraid.
  • To help children more realistically assess risk, educate children that most people who visit the doctor or wear a mask probably don’t have the virus.
  • It is important to remind children that we are all trying our best to stay healthy and it’s not anyone’s fault if they do get sick.

6) Remember to model positive behavior

  • Parents who show good coping skills can help reassure kids that they are safe. After all, kids learn from their parents how to react in new situations.
  • Remember that kids make mistakes. If your child accidentally does not wash their hands or doesn’t sneeze into their elbow, gently remind them. Scaring children with the potential consequences of their mistakes is not helpful.
  • Adults should model self-care behaviors: Maintain activities and sleep schedules. Eat healthfully and practice hand hygiene and cough etiquette.
  • It’s also helpful for grownups to limit their own media consumption around Coronavirus (COVID-19) and stick to a few trusted resources such as the Centers for Disease Control to prevent information overload and anxiety.

7) Watch for behavior changes

  • Changes in a child’s sleep, appetite, interest in being with friends or leaving the house, or levels of reassurance seeking, as well as excessive hand-washing can be signs that more help is needed.
  • If basic stress reduction techniques like deep breathing, distraction or guided imagery don’t help, reach out to your primary care provider for additional support.

Ever since my first day at St. Paul of the Cross, I knew this was an amazing community that supported one another through the good and the bad. These past few months at SPC have been filled with many examples of great joy, but we have also experienced tremendous loss and sadness. Throughout everything, the good and the bad, the sense of community and faith has been central to the gift that is St Paul of the Cross School.

Dear Parents,

Lenten Mission

This Tuesday we began our Lenten Journey with our Palm Burning Prayer Service and our Lenten Almsgiving Project. Many of you will recall the past two Lenten missions where St. Paul of the Cross Parish and School was able to help rebuild Our Lady of the Rosary Parish in Puerto Rico after the hurricane and help build St. Luke’s Parish a new church in Warren Arkansas. This year we will be helping a Catholic community in Mecca, California to build a church. At the moment the community meets outside to celebrate Mass. On Tuesday we talked with students to discuss ways they could make sacrifices to put some money in their Lenten almsgiving envelope.

Lenten Confession Schedule:

  • Mon, March 2nd, 12:45 pm to 2:45 pm (Grades 2 and 3)
  • Tue, March 3rd, 12:30 to 1:30 pm (Grade 4)
  • Mon, March 9th, 10:30 am to 11:30 am; (Grade 5)
  • Mon, March 9th 1 to 2 pm (Grade 6)
  • Tue, March 10th, 9:30 am to 11:30 am. (Grade 7 & 8)

St. Baldrick's Save the Date and Sign Up!
Last Year SPC raised over $33,000 to fight childhood cancer. We participated in honor of Dominic Vecchio, who sadly lost his courageous battle this December. This year let us honor the memory and fight of Dominic and so many children who face cancer. Please consider joining the team and raising money. 5Essentials Survey: Please, please complete--we only have a 17% completion rate. SPC parents can do better!
Beginning February 18, teachers, parents, and students across the Archdiocese of Chicago will have an opportunity to participate in the Climate, Culture, and Catholic Identity Survey utilizing the 5Essentials Survey. This survey is designed to generate a detailed picture of the inner workings of St. Paul of the Cross School. As a parent, this opportunity will allow you to share your thoughts on the important elements of school effectiveness in a survey about your child’s school.

The 5Essentials Survey will be administered online by UChicago Impact at the University of Chicago. The survey gathers data related to five indicators that can predict important student outcomes, including improved attendance and larger test score gains. These five indicators that affect and predict school success are:

  • Effective Leaders
  • Collaborative Teachers
  • Involved Families
  • Supportive Environments
  • Ambitious Instruction

Prior research has shown that schools that were strong on at least three of these “5Essential” indicators were ten times more likely to improve student learning gains in math and reading than those that were weak on three or more Essentials.

All teachers and 4th through 8th-grade students will be responding to this survey. 5Essentials Reports will be generated for schools if their teachers and/or students meet the response rate threshold of 50 percent. These reports will be sent to schools and the Archdiocese in May 2020. Additionally, the Archdiocese has chosen to provide the 5Essential parent survey. If at least 20 percent of St. Paul of the Cross parents complete this survey, a parent supplement report will also be generated.

Your participation in the parent portion of the survey will help us. Your identity and survey responses will be kept completely confidential and will never be connected to you or your child.

Attention Parents and Students - Endowment Scholarships Five Merit Based Scholarships

The Endowment Committee is excited to announce the merit-based scholarships available to current SPC students for the 2020-2021 school year. Each year the Endowment administers five merit-based, named scholarships totaling $3,750:

  1. Pastoral Leadership Award- We are pleased to invite current 5th and 6th grade students to Three monetary awards of $750 will be given to students who most demonstrate the qualities of leadership and service to others.
  2. Maureen Kelly McCambridge Scholarship- We are pleased to invite current 7th grade students to apply for this $1000 scholarship established in Maureen’s honor and
  3. Roseann McHugh New Family Welcome Award- This $500 award is available to families who, for the first time during the 2019-2020 school year, have students in K-7th grades and are returning to SPC for a second year. It will be granted to welcome a new family to the SPC community.

The Six Flags® Read to Succeed Six Hour Reading Club

A few weeks ago all kindergarten through sixth grade students received the Six Flags Read to Succeed Six Hour Reading Club information. The Six Flags® Read to Succeed Six Hour Reading Club is due by Wednesday. April 8th.  Teachers will not be accepting reading logs after that date. Every student in kindergarten through sixth grade who completes six hours of recreational reading and enters the information online by Friday, Wednesday, April 8th is eligible for a free admission ticket valid at Six Flags Great America. Tickets will arrive in May, and will be distributed to those students that participated.

Dear Parents,

This Saturday, our 8th grade Confirmandi will receive the Holy Sacrament of Confirmation. Please keep them in your prayers as we celebrate Confirmation at 9:30 am with The Most Reverend Bishop Mark Bartosic. Having completed a number of Confirmation interviews myself, I know our 8th graders are ready for this special day!  

LENT BEGINS ON WEDNESDAY
Our students will begin our Lenten Journey on Tuesday morning when we gather for a short Palm Burning prayer Service. Please have your children bring their palms to their classrooms by Monday so that their palms may be included in the Palm Burning Prayer Service. 

On Tuesday afternoon, we will gather as a school in the afternoon to learn about our Lenten Mission. Students will be coming home on Wednesday afternoon with their almsgiving envelopes. 

We will gather for Ash Wednesday Mass at 1:30 on 2/26.

NEW: FACTS Tuition Management System

Beginning in July 2020, we are switching to FACTS Tuition Management for our tuition collection. We will detail the migration next week in the Thursday mailing. We are also working with FACTS at creating an online system for our May mailing, which will allow you to complete all the required forms online. In addition to online forms, you will be able to upload the necessary medical documentation. It is our hope that the new system will be more family and environmentally friendly.

Celebrating the Spirit - Deadline Tomorrow Sign Up for Teacher Celebrations, Out of Uniform Passes, Mother Son Dinner, and MORE!

Don't forget, one last chance to sign up online for all of the fabulous Teacher Celebrations, Out of Uniform Passes, Mother Son Dinner, and a few select Party Boards! 

Thanks to all who have been going online to sign up for our wonderful CTS offerings, including the Teacher Celebrations, Mother Son Dinner, Father Daughter Dance, Out of Uniform Passes, and Parent Celebration Parties (Party Boards)! This is truly a community endeavor!

If you or your friends have plans to sign up for one or more of our CTS Party Boards (there are a few open spots and these parties are NOT to be missed!) and have not yet done so, please don't delay. ALL CTS Party Boards will be closed after tomorrow, February 21. Please click here to go to the the CTS website where you can sign up online.

To sign up for Teacher Celebrations (these are super fun parties for your child and his/her classmates hosted by their teachers!!!), Mother Son Dinner, Father Daughter Dance, and Out of Uniform Passes, please click on this link. The teachers have very creative and fun parties planned for your children!

The CTS website will close after tomorrow, February 21st. After that, the Teacher Celebrations & Father Daughter Dance prices increase to $25 each ($50 per father/daughter couple). The Mother Son Dinner will be $100 per mother/son couple. For Teacher Celebrations you will be able to send in cash/check to the teachers. There will be a form available for the Mother Son Dinner and the Father Daughter Dance that can be sent in with cash/check to the school office. If you are planning on purchasing any of these, we recommend you do this online before it closes.

Chess Ed Spring Session! Last Chance for Discounted Registration 
Registration for the Spring Session of the after school chess program is underway! The 10-week program takes place on Tuesdays from 2-3 pm and runs from 2/25/20 to 5/5/20. The chess program is taught by Chess-Ed instructors and is open to all SPC students in 1st through 8th grade, and students of all chess abilities, novice or continuing.

Professional instruction will include the basics for novice players and build with opening theory, middle game planning, and end game combinations for continuing students. Playing chess improves memory, uses analytical and critical thinking skills, teaches problem solving, responsibility, sportsmanship, social skills and more! The benefits of chess last a lifetime.
