As we continue our Lenten journey, we are reminded that this sacred season calls us to prayer, reflection, and a deeper awareness of Christ’s presence in our lives. Even in the quiet and simplicity of Lent, there are so many moments of grace and joy within our school community.
One such moment was witnessed last week through the incredible work of our 5th-grade students in their Living Stations presentation. Their reverence, preparation, and heartfelt portrayal of Christ’s Passion were truly inspiring and a powerful reminder of the meaning of this season. We are so proud of them and grateful for the way they helped bring our community into deeper reflection.
I would also like to extend my sincere gratitude to Sister Pia for her ongoing dedication to our students and her leadership in program development. Her presence is a true blessing to our school, and we are fortunate to have her guiding our students in faith and purpose each day.
As we look ahead, please keep an eye out for information coming in April about our next Coffee with the Principal gathering and an upcoming Young Men’s Club meeting. These opportunities continue to strengthen the partnership between school and family, and I look forward to connecting with many of you.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support, your partnership, and your commitment to our shared mission. Let us continue to walk together in faith during this Lenten season, keeping our hearts centered on Christ.

We’re excited to introduce Blaze, a new program for girls in grades 7–8 at SPC. Blaze is part of the Walking with Purpose ministry that so many of the women at our Parish already know and love. We will begin with a 6-week Bible study titled “Discovering My Purpose.”
This Bible study opens girls’ eyes to their unique gifts, their God-given purpose, and the depth of His love for them. The aim of Blaze is to help young women grow in confidence, deepen their faith, and better understand who God created them to be. Our hope is that through honest conversations, meaningful lessons, and time spent as a community, each girl will feel seen, encouraged, and inspired.

Accelerated Reading/ELA Program Requirements
Grades 6–8 St. Paul of the Cross Catholic School St. Paul of the Cross Catholic School is committed to providing an engaging and challenging academic environment that supports the growth of every student. In our Middle School program (Grades 6–8), students participate in a two-period English block designed to strengthen both Reading and English Language Arts (ELA) skills.
Program Structure All students in Grades 6–8 are enrolled in two daily periods of English instruction (fall 2026), divided into the following areas:
Reading
English Language Arts (ELA)
Each grade level (6–8) has three English sections. Within these sections, one designated section per grade level is assigned as the Accelerated Reading/ELA section. This section provides students with opportunities for deeper analysis, advanced reading selections, and a more rigorous pace of instruction.
Accelerated Reading/ELA Placement Students invited to participate in the Accelerated Reading/ELA section are selected based on a holistic review of academic performance and readiness. Placement considerations include:
i-Ready Reading/English assessment scores
Earned grades in English and Reading coursework
Teacher recommendation
The number of students selected for the accelerated section may vary based on overall grade-level enrollment and scheduling considerations.
Placement Review Process To ensure thoughtful and appropriate placement, the Principal, Assistant Principal, and English teachers in Grades 5–8 meet to review student data and discuss potential candidates for the Accelerated Reading/ELA program. This collaborative review allows faculty to consider each student’s academic performance, work habits, and readiness for an accelerated learning environment.
Final Determination Final placement decisions are made after careful consideration of the above criteria and the overall composition of each grade level. The goal of this process is to ensure that students are placed in learning environments that best support their continued growth, confidence, and academic success.
With gratitude and blessings, James White Principal
Our next meeting will take place on Friday, April 17, at 8am in the Holy Family Chapel. A Zoom link will be sent out if you would like to attend virtually.

As we continue our Lenten journey together, we are reminded that this sacred season is a time of prayer, reflection, and joyful anticipation of the Resurrection. During these weeks of Lent, our students have been growing in faith through prayer, service, and acts of kindness, and it has been inspiring to witness their sincere efforts to live out the Gospel each day. Even in the quiet and reflective moments of Lent, we are always reminded that the great joy of Easter is drawing closer with every passing day.
This Sunday, March 15th, we look forward to celebrating our next SPC Family Mass at 10:30 a.m. in the Holy Family Chapel. The Church celebrates this day as Laetare Sunday, which means “Rejoice.” It is a beautiful moment in the Lenten season when we pause to celebrate the hope and joy that come from knowing that Easter is near. In keeping with this joyful tradition, all of our students are invited to wear something rose-colored (pink) colored to Mass as a visible sign of this celebration.
We are especially excited that our PS–K students will be helping with the Mass as readers, gift bearers, collection ushers, and greeters. It is always a blessing to see our youngest Spartans so joyfully participating in the life of our parish community.
At this time, we still need several readers for this Mass, as well as a few additional volunteers for roles that do not require reading. If your child would be willing and available to assist, please contact Sr. Pia at [email protected].
Looking ahead, from March 21st through March 31st, our parish is very excited to host a Shroud of Turin Exhibit, featuring a life-size replica of the Holy Shroud, the burial cloth of Jesus. This special exhibit will give our students the opportunity to learn more about the events surrounding Jesus’ crucifixion and to reflect more deeply on the meaning of this sacred season.
Each afternoon, the exhibit will be open for students from 1:00–3:30 PM, and we warmly invite you to stop by and experience this powerful and prayerful encounter with the Holy Shroud. In addition to the life-size replica, the exhibit will feature interactive stations with replicas of historical items from the time of Jesus, including the crown of thorns, crucifixion nails, anointing oil, the titulus (the sign placed on the cross), the Sudarium (the cloth that covered Jesus’ face), and other meaningful elements connected to Christ’s Passion.
Thank you, as always, for the many ways you support our faith-filled community. I hope to see many of our SPC families gathered together this Sunday as we pray, celebrate, and rejoice together on this special Laetare Sunday.

Jersey Mikes Month of Giving for Local Special Olympics Athletes
As we continue our Lenten journey, we are reminded that this sacred season invites us to slow down, reflect, and renew our hearts. Lent calls us to prayer, sacrifice, and service — and I see those virtues lived out each day in our Saint Paul of the Cross Catholic School community. In our classrooms, hallways, and homes, we are striving to grow not only in knowledge but also in faith and love for one another. Thank you for the many quiet sacrifices you make for your children and for our school. Together, we continue to build something truly special.
This Monday, March 9, we are excited to welcome a very special guest to the principal’s office! First grader Gabriella F. will serve as Principal for the Day. Gabriella will work alongside me from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., assisting with morning announcements, enjoying breakfast meetings, conducting classroom walk-throughs, attending meetings, joining students for lunch, and even participating in planning discussions. We are looking forward to her joyful leadership and enthusiasm!

Help us be the best we can be…5Essentials Survey At Saint Paul of the Cross, we value our strong partnership with families and deeply appreciate the role you play in our school community. One important way you can share your voice is by participating in the 2026 5Essentials® Parent Survey, sponsored by the Archdiocese of Chicago.
The 5Essentials® is a research-based school improvement survey that gathers feedback on key aspects of a school’s culture and climate. Parent input helps schools better understand their strengths and identify areas for growth in five essential areas:
Effective Leaders
Collaborative Teachers
Involved Families
Supportive Environment
Ambitious Instruction
Survey results provide valuable insights that guide improvement planning and professional learning, ultimately supporting positive outcomes for our students.
We encourage all SPC parents to take a few moments to complete the survey before it closes on March 20, 2026. Your responses are confidential and truly make a difference.
Thank you for your continued support of Saint Paul of the Cross and for partnering with us in this important work. We are grateful for your time, your trust, and your voice.

Tuition Rates 2026/2027: 5% Increase As part of our planning for the 2026–2027 school year, we want to share an overview of the 5% tuition increase that will be reflected in next year’s rates. This adjustment allows Saint Paul of the Cross School to continue providing a high-quality Catholic education while responsibly addressing rising operational costs.
The increase is primarily driven by projected expenses, including a 3.5–4% salary increase to remain competitive and retain excellent faculty and staff, a 6–12% rise in employee benefits, and a minimum 6% increase in utility costs. In addition, we anticipate approximately a 10% increase in instructional materials and supplies, along with higher costs associated with campus maintenance, capital improvements, and ongoing investments in school safety and security.
Our budget is built on a projected enrollment of 730 students in grades Preschool through 8 and reflects our commitment to careful financial stewardship while prioritizing student learning, faculty support, and a safe, well-maintained campus. We are grateful for your continued partnership and trust as we work together to sustain and strengthen the mission of SPC.

Calendar 2026/2027: We are happy to share a draft of the 2026–2027 school calendar to help families begin planning for the upcoming school year. This calendar has been submitted to the Archdiocese of Chicago and is awaiting final approval, but we wanted to provide an early look at the general structure of the year.
Please keep in mind that this draft highlights major dates and does not include all weekly activities or events. Once we receive final approval, a complete and finalized calendar will be shared with our school community. 2026-2027 School Calendar Draft
For the First Sunday of Lent on February 22, 2026, the Gospel (Matthew 4:1-11) Recounts Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness, emphasizing his victory over Satan through Scripture, fasting, and obedience. This passage calls believers to examine their own temptations, resist worldly treasures, and rely on God’s grace during the Lenten journey. Mt 4:1-11
Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And he fasted forty days and forty nights, and afterward he was hungry. And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” But he answered, “It is written,
‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’”
Then the devil took him to the holy city, and set him on the pinnacle of the temple, 6 and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down; for it is written,
‘He will give his angels charge of you,’
and
‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’”
Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’” Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and the glory of them; and he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” Then Jesus said to him, “Begone, Satan! for it is written,
‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’”
Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and ministered to him.
With gratitude and blessings, James White Principal

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the SPC community for your generous support of our annual Celebrating the Spirit event. Your gifts of time, talent, and treasure are deeply appreciated, and your ongoing commitment to our school strengthens and sustains our mission. Our committee is diligently finalizing the event details, and we look forward to sharing the proceeds with you in the coming days.
Next week, Sr. Pia will share details about our Lenten activities for the school community. These will include Ash Wednesday Mass, a school-wide presentation of the Living Stations of the Cross, and additional opportunities for students and families to reflect and grow together during the Lenten and Easter seasons. I will also post the 2026/2027 tuition rates and school calendar once Arch approval is received.
Please look for a separate email later this week about our newly formed Young Men’s Club for male students in grades 4–8. I will facilitate a lunch meeting next Friday for interested students. The club will support the continued development of young Catholic men through virtue, positive socialization, and faith formation in their daily lives. More details will be shared soon.
As part of our ongoing commitment to prayer and faith leadership, I am asking that all programs, athletic events, and meetings begin with prayer. Sr. Pia is currently drafting a common prayer for all athletic teams and events. In addition, we will introduce a “common” welcome prayer along with the National Anthem at the start of all athletic events.
As we reflect on this week’s Gospel reading, may we be reminded of our call to live as witnesses of Christ’s love:
“You are the salt of the earth… You are the light of the world… Let your light so shine before others, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”
— Matthew 5:13–16
May we continue to let our light shine brightly in all that we do, bringing glory to God through our words and actions.

Dear SPC Families, Congratulations to all of our students who received the Sacrament of Reconciliation this past week. We are so proud of them and continue to hold them in our prayers. May the love and mercy of Christ fill their hearts and guide them each day.
2026–2027 School Year Calendar Update Our draft calendar for the 2026–2027 school year has been finalized and submitted to the Archdiocese of Chicago for approval. Once approved, we will share the calendar with all families in a separate communication in the coming weeks.
As a new principal within the Archdiocese, I have gained a deep appreciation for the many parameters that must be considered when building a school calendar. Over the past several weeks, our administrative team has worked diligently to ensure compliance with Archdiocesan requirements while also supporting our SPC community. The proposed calendar includes:
176 instructional days, as prescribed by the Archdiocese
Alignment with local school districts
Required professional development days and holidays
A full week off for Thanksgiving and two weeks for Christmas
A proposed first day of school on August 24, 2026
A projected last day of school on June 4, 2027
We will wait for final approval before publication. Stay tuned for updates.
Looking Ahead: Program Enhancements Beginning Fall 2026 Are you looking for additional rigor and focused instructional time? We are excited to share several enhancements planned for fall 2026:
New accelerated English courses for grades 6, 7, and 8
Accelerated mathematics for grade 5 (previously shared)
STEM programming expanded to include Preschool as a weekly elective
i-Ready pathway expectations completed during the school day under teacher supervision, rather than as take-home assignments (previously shared)
Elimination of Archdiocesan PD days with asynchronous learning — all PD days will now be days off for students
Revised Parent & Student Handbook, coming soon
All newly implemented programs for fall 2026 will be shared in one comprehensive publication this summer for your review.
Important School Closure Reminder I want to be sure all families have seen this information, and I sincerely appreciate your understanding and support. Due to inclement weather conditions, Saint Paul of the Cross School will be closed from Friday, January 23 through Sunday, January 25. School will reopen on Monday, January 26. The campus will be completely closed during this time. As a result:
All school activities, athletic games, Bitty Basketball, hot lunch, the Home & School meeting, and the Home & School dress-down day will be rescheduled
The Catholic Schools Week Open House has been cancelled
Students will be reminded prior to dismissal today to bring home any materials or personal items they may need before returning on Monday
This decision was made with the safety and well-being of our entire SPC community as our top priority. Thank you for your patience, flexibility, and continued partnership.
