This design was inspired by bandannas from the early 1910s to late 1920s. Most notably the designs change dramatically from ornate designs of the plains bandannas. The influence of art and taste of pattern gradually shifted from eurocentric to americana in this era. The center motif is simple but the 3 to 1 change in black and white gives it some flair. Instead of using traditional bandanna motifs on the outside of the bandana One Ear Brand went with tattoo-style roses. The strong lines and dotted gradations add a subtle but playful detail to the design. Its an interesting balance of old and new design ideas and structure.

A little about the artist who draws and does the art on all the bandannas:

“Yurika Cherise Shikai is a Japanese-American illustrator and designer.  She was born and raised in the culturally diverse East Los Angeles and draws from a variety of cultural influences within the city and through living and working abroad.

Sketching is a personal compulsion that allows her to gain a more intimate understanding of the world through mentally tracing and “feeling” shapes and forms. She finds a satisfaction in applying simple graphic HB pencil to paper, with a rough urgency to transpose the tracing activity of the mind, to the hand.”
