Miss Derec’s February
PreKindergarten and Preschool News

Can you believe that we have only twenty-four days left of Preschool and thirty-six days left of Pre-K? We have learned a lot in the past six months of school. We have grown physically, socially, and emotionally. At the beginning of the year I had a group of nervous children lined up outside to enter school for the very first time. Several children even had to be carried in. Many of those students who were carried in are now running down the hall just to get into the classroom. It is so exciting to see that everyday!

In Preschool, we finished up with the last of our shapes, which was the oval. We made self-portraits, and added yarn for hair. The students liked that they were able to pick out the color yarn that best matched their hair. A couple of weeks ago we started learning about different kinds of animals. During dog week, we colored a picture of a big dog and added a bone. We also read a couple of dog stories including Superdog the Heart of A Hero and Beatrice Doesn’t Want To.

During cat week we colored a picture of a cat and added yarn to the picture since cats like yarn. We also read Have You Got My Purr. This week we made birds out of small paper plates, and added feathers to the plates. We read the story Earthquack.

We have also been talking about the Olympics lately. We colored a picture of a person on a sled to represent bobsledding. We then attached a pom-pom at the top of each hat. We also added popsicle sticks to make it look like a wooden sled. Both the Preschool and Pre-K students were sent home with a gold medal this week.

In Pre-K we worked on capital letters Q, R, S, and T. We have also worked on lower case letters c, d, f, g, and next week h. During Q week, each child decorated a square piece of paper, and I put all the squares from their class together to make a quilt. We added some yarn to the end of our quilt and hung the stunning quilts in the hall. For the letter R, we made Raggedy Ann and Andy. The students had to color his/her own doll. We then added hair, and a button to put the finishing touches on the doll. They looked so adorable hanging up in the hall. The students got many compliments on how nice they looked. Last week we worked on the letter S. The letter S is a difficult letter for students to write. After practicing writing the letter S all week, we made slimy, slippery snakes to hang up in the hall. This month we also talked about the Olympics. Since the Olympics are in Torino, we colored skaters, skiers, and bobsledders. We also made Olympic torches. Next week we will be working on the letter U.

Report cards will be going home on Thursday March 9 th and Friday March 10 th. I will be starting testing again next week. Pre-K conferences are being held on Thursday March 16th. There will be no Preschool that day. Preschool conferences are held at the end of the year. If any parents have any questions, please feel free to email me at mderec@spc-school.net.
