We are the Eighth Grade

We learn together.

We pray together.

We laugh together.

Please welcome Ms. Allison Scienski to St. Paul of the Cross School.   Ms. Scienski is completing her teacher training at North Park University and will be student teaching in eighth grade reading and English.

In the month of April,  the eighth graders will be writing a creative narrative.  The topic?  Their twentieth reunion from SPC.  This paper allows them to  showcase their creativity and outstanding writing abilities.

The eighth graders will be reading a play based on the diary of Anne Frank.  This enables our students to make cross curricular connections with the unit on the Holocaust which they are studying in social studies.   Additionally,  our soon- to- be grads will  read the Newbery Award winning novel The Giver by Lois Lowry.

In grammar, our students have been studying different sentence types in order to give their writing variety and interest.   They applied their skills by writing an original movie review.  Watch out Hollywood!
In reading they are continuing their study of the short story by reading  noted authors,  such as Amy Tan and Ray Bradbury.

The new year brings new challenges and learning opportunities for the Class of 2010.

The eighth  grade has read Shipwreck at the Bottom of the World, a non-fictional account of Sir Ernest  Shackleton’s trek to the South Pole at the turn of  last century.  This enriching novel not only improves the students’ reading skills, but serves as a  wealth of information about the geography and history of this fascinating region.

In English class the students will continue to refine their language arts skillsthrough  Daily Oral Language and grammar units .

Our recent assignments include to write and deliver an Acceptance Speech, and a comparison/contrast essay.
