6th Grade - Mrs. Luft

Welcome to Room 218!

As the school year moves on, the sixth graders find themselves rapidly moving into more complicated work as they approach seventh grade.  We are continuing our literature circles, but have added depth to our work by creating booklets outlining the literary elements in the stories.  We are also learning to create detailed time/plot lines for the stories in our textbooks and learning to outline nonfiction materials in our texts.
We have carried our learning from Reading over to our Social Studies and are beginning to outline our chapters as we read them.  We will soon be visiting ancient Greece in our studies.  Along with learning about early democracy and philosophers, we will read the story of Odysseus and his trials along his journey home from the Trojan war.

Social Studies: This year we will begin our travels around the year 8000 BC and will continue through Ancient Rome. We will make real mummies andlearn to write in hieroglyphics. We'll learn about ancient Greek and Roman mythology, about the beginnings of democracy, and how to elect our president.

Our atlases will take us on a geographical journey that will circle the globe.

Join us on our adventures by checking our page from time to time- we love to share what we’re doing!

Reading: The sixth grade reading curriculum focuses on exploring the different genres of literature—fiction, non-fiction, plays, poetry, drama, and folk tales/legends.

This year we have a new addition of our reading anthology, a copy which can be found online at www.classzone.com.  Username: child's first initial and last name, Password: six

Along with the text students will be using many new resources including power presentations, an audio anthology, and media files that include short film clips and commercials to aid in understanding and “reading” different types of literature.

In addition to fostering an appreciation of the various types of literature, reading skills and strategies will be reviewed and reinforced.  Sixth grade reading will also include the study of novels as both a whole class activity and within literature circle groups. Grades will be based on class work and participation, comprehension and vocabulary quizzes, tests, and projects.

On October 22nd, a docent from the Field Museum came to SPC to present an activity regarding Mayan Pottery, as part of the continuing "Building Bridges" program (see more info about this program below). The students learned about this ancient and complex civilization and had the opportunity to create their own pottery as well. Students also made their own names in heiroglyphics as the 6th grade at both schools are studying ancient civilizations this year in Social Studies.
