6th Grade - Mrs. Lampshire
Welcome to Room 216!

Samantha M. is Room 216’s Webstar student of the month!
Samantha has attended St. Paul of the Cross School since pre-kindergarten. She has two brothers, Nicco in the seventh grade and Anthony at Notre Dame High School, and a sister, Natalie, in the fourth grade.
Two other important family members are Dascher and Lucky. Dascher was the runt of a litter of puppies Samantha’s uncle found in a dumpster. Samantha’s dad found Lucky, a stray dog, at the firehouse where he works. It seems both dogs are pretty lucky!
Soccer is Samantha’s favorite sport. She’s on a travel team and dreams of one day becoming a professional soccer player. She wants to be a kindergarten teacher too. She likes little kids and is thinking of starting to baby-sit soon.
Samantha’s favorite food is spaghetti and she enjoys going out to local Italian restaurants such as Nonna Silvia’s, Nonno Pino’s and Moretti’s. Guess where Samantha would go if she could go anywhere in the world? Italy!
Samantha is looking forward to summer when she can hang out at the pool and go on a family vacation to Disney World. She’ll also spend some time with her cousins at their house on Green Lake in Wisconsin. Samantha is a Cubs fan and plans on going to a few baseball games this summer too.
It has been a pleasure having Samantha in Room 216. Best wishes to her for a great summer!
Math Class
Throughout the year sixth-graders will reinforce skills they’ve learned in the past while applying these skills to new concepts. We will concentrate on using the four mathematical operations with decimals, fractions and integers. Students will also explore some new frontiers in algebra; ratio, proportion and percent; measurement, geometry and problem solving strategies.
April 2010: Students are wrapping up our measurement unit by composing a song incorporating all the conversions rates of either the customary or the metric system. They will perform the songs the week after Spring Break. After we finish geometry, it will be time to start working with pre-algebra, including integers, the coordinate grid and equations.
March 2010: After working with percentages, six graders will be learning some geometry, including formulas for area and volume. Along the way we will review measurement, including the customary and metric systems.

April 2010: Students continue their study of the Old Testament. We just finished Kings, and for our unit review students will put on a talk show and conduct interviews with some of the major judges and kings. After that we will begin our final unit on the prophets. March 2010: Students continue their study of the Old Testament. We just finished Judges and are moving on to Kings. Students will learn some of King David’s psalms and find some good advice within Kings Solomon’s proverbs.
Overall, the sixth-grade program is devoted to the study of God’s saving love as it is revealed in Sacred Scripture, particularly the Hebrew Scriptures. The text is designed to help the students increase their knowledge of salvation history, so that they may respond to God with ever-deepening love and gratitude. The students learn the message’s relevance for today and how to apply it to their lives. Students need their religion book and spiral notebook for every class. A bible will be required at home to complete some homework. The student’s grade is determined by class participation, class work, homework, projects, quizzes and tests.
In the Second Step program, taught in Religion, students learn and practice vital social skills, such as empathy, emotion management, problem solving, conflict resolution and cooperation.
