We have finished our Science Focus Projects! Click on this link for photos of our terrific projects!
Some students wanted to try Paige's "Smile Test" - go to www.bbc.co.uk/science/humanbody/mind/surveys/smiles/
If it doesn't take you right to the survey, type "smile survey" into the search box at the top of that page.
Click here for a Web Gallery of some of our projects this year - please come to see all of the projects on April 28 before the Spring Concert!!

We have started our Astronomy Unit and are discussing some awesome and exciting topics such as Life Cycles of Stars, Types of Galaxies, and have learned how to classify stars using the HR Diagram. We are looking forward to visiting the Adler Planetarium at the end of March! |

| The Sixth Grade Science curriculum is primarily Earth Science. Students explore topics related to the composition of the earth and soil, plate tectonics, earthquakes and volcanoes, erosion and deposition, rocks and minerals and finish up the year with a unit on Astronomy. Students are engaged in many hands-on investigations, experiments and model-making. All six-graders are also required to design, conduct and present a science project as well. |
We continue studying topics in Earth Science. Pictured below is a lab was exploring the physical properties of MINERALS! Students were given a set of 8 mineral samples and performed tests of hardness and streak and observed luster, cleavage and color. The lab partners then needed to use a mineral ID manual to identify the name of the mineral! Most of the students guessed correctly!
We also studied EARTHQUAKES and VOLCANOES and did a few Web Lessons on the laptop computers to enrich our study. As a lab for this unit, we explored what makes a building earthquake resistant. Testing several structures with various design differences, the students predicted and then tested which structure would stand up the longest on our shake table. It was earth-shakingly fun!
Pictured below are some photos from our recent lab activities: |
