5th Grade Archive

The fifth graders worked  with their prayer partners this month. We prepared  a Mass for the whole school to celebrate St. Francis of Assisi. We sang "What a Wonderful World" and also sang songs in Spanish to Honor our guests from Epiphany School http://www.epiphanychicago.org/school/

We have begun writing to the students from Epiphnay school and hope to meet our pen pals sometime this year. We have already learned much about a different community in our area. We celebrated Mass with our Epiphany friends and hope to be able to do so again soon.

We learned more about the virtue of the month......respect.  Mrs. Jacobs read How Smudge Came by Nan Gregory and illustrated by Ron Lightburn. This was a wonderful book. All of the children enjoyed the story and discussion.  Take time to ask a fifth grader or first grader what they learned from this lesson. We would also recommend checking out this book to read at home. Discuss how this book illustrates the virtue of respect. We can all learn something from this book.

In science we dissected owl regergitation....owl pellets.  An owl produces a pellet because it can not digest the hair, feathers and bones of prey animals.  It is a wonderful (and GROSS) look at the food chain.  The students separate the bones from fur and feathers. Students used classification charts to identfy the bones of various prey animals. This was their first lab. They all did a great job, learned a lot and had fun.

This month we have had many special guest speakers. We have really learned to be very appreciative of all that we have (especially indoor plumbing).  Fifth graders have a new repect for other cultures and ways of life.  Ms. Sasha Hallagan, sister of Olivia, came to teach us about Bolivia and Peru. She went to these countries to teach children with special needs. She showed the students pictures of her trip and gave them a real lesson in life outside the United States. We are very blessed to have had Ms. Sasha open our eyes to our many blessings.

We also had several missionaries from Divine Word Seminary come show us toys of many lands. Students were amazed by a lunch box from Thailand and a "bed" from the Phillipines.  The puppets from Africa were also facinating.

Our fifth graders created some impressive poems for their poetry books. With over ten poems in their books, they’ve explored rhythm and rhyme, learned to “play” with words, and have come away feeling confident in their mastery of the poem. We’ve moved on to learning about nouns. Our students are searching through newspapers for the elusive common, proper, and possessive nouns, and are gluing them to our “noun” board. Sox and Cub fans seem determined to find the largest proper noun team logo for the board! Following are only a few of the outstanding poems your children wrote:

Books

The moon is my sister

The stars are my friends

The earth is my mother

The sun is my dad.

The world is my family

The universe my home

Wherever I read about

It’s where I belong.

The mountains of words,

So tall and grand

The meadows of pictures

With flowers of every color.

The desserts of adventure

With swords in every sand

The ocean of plots

With waves of jokes.

The beaches of excitement

Oh how I love it so!

The town of characters

Which fade from ugly to love

All by the way you look at it.

So go watch your T.V.

But don’t blame me if you’re alone.

Because it’s in books

Where you belong!

If Only I Had A Dolphin

If only I had a dolphin for a pet…

My mom says dolphins are not meant to be pets.

However, I think differently.

My mother says that if I can prove it to her

That dolphins make good pets

Then maybe she’d consider it.

Well, first of all, where would you keep it?

I said, “ I could keep it in the bathtub.”

Where would you take your bath?

I would take it with my dolphin.

How would you feed it, asked my mother?

I would feed it my old goldfish.

How would it get its exercise?

I would take it to the local town pool.

Who will take care of it while you’re out of the house?

And your father and I are at work?

I’ll take it with me.

So mom, what do you say?

I say, ask your father.

The Concept of Thought

Think, think, think, what should I think of today?

Thinking is just jumping into time and space without

parental supervision whatsoever!

Thinking is taking your mind and squeezing flavor into it

from the fruits of thought to make a colorful creation of

wonder.

Thinking is going to the ice cream stop of creation,

tasting every flavor of thought to make a sundae of

peace of mind.

Thinking is flying into the universe of wisdom and

jumping to every star, planet, and nebula to form a

constellation of thought.

I love to think!

Spooky

frighten, scary, freaky

I am very sneaky!

DRAGONS

Dragons go everywhere from Mars to Alabama

Running off with furry little brownies breathing

fire flames to keep away the evil spirits.
