3 Becomes the Favorite Number for the 8 th Grade Girl’s Basketball Team!
They say good things come in 3’s and that was true as tough defense, a disciplined offensive attack and old fashion teamwork led the 8 th grade girls to a thrilling 42-40 victory over St. John Brebeuf in the championship game of the City Suburban Catholic Conference playoffs. In keeping with the theme of 3 the victory was the 3rd conference basketball championship in as many years for these young ladies. This is the first time the same team at the varsity level in basketball won championships all 3 years in conference play for a St. Paul team.
The game started out quickly in favor of the Lady Tigers jumping out to a 5-0 lead. This lead extended at times to double digits in the first half until St. John’s began to fight their way back into contention. From the outset of the second half everyone in the packed gym could see this championship was going to come down to the very end of the game as it had the previous two years between these two teams. Our Tigers battled through foul trouble and injuries to hang on to a lead that throughout the entire game they never relinquished. The game was hanging in the balance with less than 20 seconds and SPC having a two point lead but the ball was in St. John’s hands. What has become their signature over their varsity careers they once again rose to the occasion with a great defensive stand and pulled down the last rebound to run out the clock and a two point victory.
To get to the championship game the girls defeated St. Eugene’s in their opening round contest and then defeated Mary Seat of Wisdom in the semi-finals. In addition to earning their third consecutive conference basketball championship, the girls were in first place in the Suburban Division with a 16-1 record. This was also their third straight division 1 st place finish. Once again that number 3!
Congratulations to Catherine B., Caitlin C., Alison C., Alexa K., Jackie M., Emily M., Kelly N., Shannon O., Jessica P. and Erin S. who were coached by Ted Zurkowski, John Cottrell and Fran O’Malley. They would like to thank all the fans who came out to games through out the year and especially the tremendous support during their playoff run and to the parents for the many rides to practices, games and tournaments over the years.
