Math Olympiad

 

Nineteen 8th graders participated in this year’s Math Olympiad.  They met before school on Wednesday mornings.  Along with the 7th grade team, they were honored with a Certificate of High Achievement for scoring in the top 20% of the top mathletes in the world.  The 8th graders were presented with individual trophies for their four year commitment to Math Olympiad.

Participants were Will, Michael, Matt, Mike, Kelly, Shannon, Catherine, Marcel, Genevieve, Alec, Austin, Greg, Emily, Luke, Anthony, Jack, Tom, Ali, and Noor (pictured above) .

The 14 members of the 7th grade Math Olympiad team along with the 8th grade team earned a Certificate of High Achievement for scoring in the top 20% of the 831 teams that participated in the global competition.  The team met every Thursday during lunch to do difficult math problems.  The highest scorer at St. Paul of the Cross was Rachel, who received a trophy.  Rachel, along with Joe and Rebecca earned a silver pin for scoring in the top 10% of all mathletes.  All 14 members of the 7th grade team received embroidered patches by scoring in the top 50%  of the top mathletes in the world.

Nineteen 5th and 6th grade students from Saint Paul of the Cross School were among the 103,000 students worldwide that participated in Division E of this year’s Math Olympiad program.  They participated in a series of five monthly contests of 5 problems each, from November to March, and weekly lunchtime practice sessions under the supervision and coaching of Mrs. Widmaier. The students solved unusual and difficult problems.  They learned to think creatively, “outside of the box”.

Five students:  Brooke, Zach, Ian, Colin, and Joe earned a silver pin by scoring within the top 10% of all mathletes worldwide.  Six other mathletes earned an embroidered patch for scoring in the top 50% of all mathletes worldwide.
